U is for Upside-Down Cake
One of the most classic American desserts is the Pineapple Upside-Down Cake. Did you know the first upside-down cake was not pineapple at all? Pineapples were not around when the concept of upside-down cakes came about, however, cherries and apples were!
What exactly is an upside-down cake? It is exactly what it sounds like; a cake served upside-down so that the fruit and sugary glaze is on top dripping over the cake. Even though Dole is accredited to the popularity of the upside-down cake with a pineapple recipe contest, it is unknown how long ago this cake dates back.
