If you want to keep your heart healthy, than you are really going to have to put some effort into your diet in order to ensure that you can stay as healthy as you can.

Eat Fruits and Vegetables. When you were growing up, undoubtedly, your mother always told you to eat your fruits and vegetables, and she probably constantly told you that these foods are good for you. Well, you know what? – She was right. Fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins and nutrients that are good for your entire body, including your heart.

Eat Less High Fat Foods. It goes without saying that you should avoid eating foods that are high in fat in order to keep yourself healthy. Foods that are high in fat, such as meats, cheeses and all of those yummy snack foods that you enjoy so much not only add to your waistline, but they can also have a negative effect on the health of your heart.

Shrink Your Portion Size. Not only is what you eat important, but the amount that you eat is just as important. When you overload your plate with food, or go back for seconds – and even thirds and fourths – you will consume more fats, calories and cholesterol, which will have a negative effect on the health of your heart.

Eat Whole Grains. You have probably heard that there is quite a big buzz around eating whole grains, and there is a very good reason for that; whole grains are full of fiber and other types of nutrients that help to control your blood pressure and the overall health of your heart. You can easily opt for more whole grains by substituting some of the foods that you already eat on a regular basis. For example, opt for breads that are made from whole grains or switch your white pasta for a whole grain pasta, instead.
